To better protect yourself and offer peace of mind while traveling, remember these following guidelines:

• Do not Publicize your travel. Share your itinerary with those you trust and have a need to know.
• Attend a foreign travel briefing with the Research Security Office and Export Control Office on every first Wednesday of the month at 1:00 PM.
• Maintain control of sensitive information. Keep it on you at all times; carry it in your carry-on luggage and NEVER leave it unattended in hotel rooms or stored in hotel safes.
• Keep hotel room door locked. Remember how the room looks upon leaving.
• Ignore of deflect intrusive or suspect inquiries about professional or personal matters.
• Know the laws and customs of the country you are visiting. Respect them and surrender any materials upon request and report it to the Research Security Office upon your return. Do not resist them.
• Register to the Smart Traveler Program with the U.S. State Department before you leave.

Do not become complacent during your travel, but remain aware your surroundings to avoid uncomfortable or potentially dangerous situations.

• Travel in groups whenever possible, especially after dark.
• Avoid isolated roads, danger areas, protests, and large crowds.
• If you sense you are being followed, DO NOT lead them back to your hotel room. Go to nearest appropriate security official or U.S. Embassy.
• Maintain a low profile.

Research the country your visiting, be the utmost prepared before you go, enjoy the trip, but do not become complacent and report any suspicious activity to the Research Security Office upon your return.
